Cheap US Travel is all about saving money so you can travel more. I have only a few rules for lodging – I want it to be safe, clean, non-smoking and affordable. Hotel room rates have been increasing and I now find that a bed and breakfast is sometimes more affordable than a standard hotel room. Many bed and breakfasts now offer discounts for AAA members, seniors, and business travelers so you may be surprised at the deals that are available.
While I was planning a July 2017 trip to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, I searched on-line for lodging options. Hotels and motels were a distance from the park entrance I wanted to visit. I don’t like to waste vacation time driving back and forth if I don’t have to. The Silver Fern Bed and Breakfast in Peninsula, Ohio ended up being the most convenient and affordable option. It was a beautiful facility located within easy walking distance of the park entrance, local restaurants and shops. We spent two nights at the Silver Fern and I would go back just to eat the delicious breakfasts. It was an incredible value for the price.
During a quick trip to visit family in Springfield, Missouri, I discovered that hotel rooms were sold out near the Springfield Cardinals Stadium. So I searched for area bed and breakfasts. Once again, I found a bed and breakfast stay which was available, cheaper than the local hotels, and included a full breakfast. It was also easy walking distance to the stadium where we joined the family for a night-time baseball game. We stayed in the Laura Ingalls Wilder room at the Walnut Street Inn.
For a quick weekend getaway in October, I once again searched the internet and located a one night stay at DeBourge Guesthouse Bed and Breakfast in Washington, Missouri. We were upgraded to a larger room at no extra charge. The room had all the usual amenities and included an extended continental breakfast. Free snacks and beverages were available whenever we wanted them. We were the only guests that evening, so we had the entire house to ourselves. We were able to enjoy the river walk and historic downtown Washington for a great price. We were also able to take advantage of the beautiful Katy Trail State Park from this location.
